The Norwich Directory

It is little wonder that Norwich is generally considered to be the capital of Norfolk. The city itself has so much to offer, and then, of course, there is the link with one of the most popular of all inland waterways, the Norfolk Broads.

Although there has, inevitably, been a good deal of modernisation, the city centre streets still retain much of their medieval charm and it is still possible to see remains of the ancient protective city walls, as well as many historic buildings.

Probably the most impressive of the latter is the Norman Cathedral, recognised as one of the finest in England, with its imposing Cloisters and Close and classic 12th century keep. It still keeps a watchful eye over the city from its prominent position and is well worth a visit, after which you could then take a stroll along what have been described as some of the most attractive cobbled streets, alleys and lanes in the country, or maybe the wonderfully relaxing Riverside walk and Chapelfield gardens.

In stark contrast to all this comparative tranquility is the state-of-the-art Forum, the Riverside development and the two impressive shopping malls, which have a pleasing mix of both high street names and individual boutiques, as well as the largest permanent open air market in England – 800 years old and doing business six days a week.

What also helps to make Norwich such an ideal place to take a short break is the fact that its main attractions are so close to each other, making it simple to explore on foot. Nor will finding a place to stay be a problem, as there is a wide selection of hotels from which to choose.

There is also the opportunity to bask in the delights of the changing seasons with nearby visits to inspiring country landscapes where you can catch a glimpse of many kinds of wildlife in their natural habitat and indulge yourself with seasonal menus at local hostelries which provide tasty food and real ale.

All kinds of different attractions are being lined up for 2012 as this charming city continues on its creative and visionary way.

At its heart Norwich nurses a thousand years of history, with its fund of stories, myths and legends, while on its doorstep the countryside and the Broads provide a stunning backdrop – a simply wonderful combination that holds irresistible appeal for so many people.
